How to look “credible” while popping champagne on someone’s funeral day

There are captains who face storms, and there are spokespersons who sink on their own — armed only with a keyboard and a bottle opened too quickly.

Maria Elena Delia, presented as the spokesperson of a “flotilla for peace,” managed to turn her mission into a New Year’s Eve parody. Not because of a shipwreck or a storm, but because of a Facebook post that quickly made headlines:

“I will go out in the street with champagne, a party horn and confetti.”

No, it wasn’t about a carnival parade. It was the day of Silvio Berlusconi’s funeral.

And so, while the country was divided between mourning, indifference, or critical reflection on a controversial figure, she chose the noisiest shortcut: turning a death into a party.

Loving or hating a politician is legitimate. Criticizing their actions is necessary. But throwing confetti over a coffin only means one thing: sinking your own credibility. Because those who advocate for justice and peace cannot celebrate death without contradicting themselves.

The result? A flotilla that was meant to symbolize humanity is now renamed:
the “Flotilla of Coherence,” sunk by a party horn.

Satirical conclusion

And who knows, maybe one day the country will actually go on strike for her.
Factories closed, schools on hold, buses stopped — not for wages, not for healthcare, but to defend the sacred right to celebrate someone’s death with champagne and confetti.
The slogan will be simple: “Coherence for Delia!”
And we, standing in line at the stations, will wonder whether the train of logic has already left… or simply derailed.

Reality note

The reference is to Maria Elena Delia, spokesperson of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
On the day of Silvio Berlusconi’s funeral, Delia published a Facebook post with the phrase “I will go out in the street with champagne, a party horn and confetti”, while also criticizing the national day of mourning.

Her words were reported by several Italian newspapers, including Il Giornale and Il Digitale. The outlet Esperia Italia, through an investigation by its director Gino Zavalani, also recalled the episode, calling it “shameful” and an example of the hypocrisy of those who invoke peace only on alternate days.
